Arthur Kips (Daniel Radcliffe) seorang pengacara muda yang kehidupannya berubah drastis takkala istrinya meninggal saat melahirkan anak pertama mereka. Hampir setiap kali pikiran itu terus menghantui dan mempengaruhi pekerjaannya sebagai seorang pengacara.

Kali ini, ia diutus oleh atasannya di London untuk menyelesaikan masalah warisan Alice Drablow yang telah lama meninggal.

Ia ditugaskan untuk mendata berapa nilai kekayaan dari rumah yang terletak di tengah-tengah rawa bernama El Marsh House. Rumah yang dianggap oleh sebagian warga sebagai rumah yang membawa kutukan.

Siapapun yang melihat wanita berbaju hitam (the woman in black), maka, kejadian aneh pun menimpa seluruh warga yang memiliki seorang anak.

Banyak warga menolak kedatangan Kips dan sinis terhadapnya, tetapi Kips tetap melanjutkan untuk tinggal di desa itu. Satu-satunya teman yang mau menerimanya adalah Mr. Daily (Ciarán Hinds). Seorang yang kurang mempercayai takhayul.

Keanehan-Keanehan pun mulai terjadi saat Kips berada di rumah keluarga besar Drablow. Mulai dari suara-suara aneh, kursi yang bergoyang sendiri, hingga penampakan The Woman in Black.

Mr. Daily menyarankan Kips agar tidak mengejar “bayangan”. Namun, Kips tetap bersikukuh mengungkap misteri dan menyelidiki mengapa roh mati penasaranan yang disebut sebagai roh Jennet selalu memberi ancaman kepada warga Desa bagi siapa yang telah melihat penampakannya.

Dari rumah itulah Kips mulai mengerti mengapa hal itu bisa terjadi, dan bergegas untuk segera mengakhiri terror si roh mati penasaran. Meskipun sebenarnya ia tidak tahu, kalau ia telah menjadi target selanjutnya dari the woman in black.
